In the winter of 1996, a French dance troupe rehearses in a snowbound studio. As the after party begins and the DJ dispenses some deep cuts, the young dancers gossip, bicker and flirt. But someone has spiked the sangria with LSD, leading to madness, murder, and modern dance.

In California, during the height of the Great Depression, drifter Robert (Michael Sarrazin) and misanthrope Gloria (Jane Fonda, never shadier). compete with other desperate couples in a grueling dance marathon for a $1500 prize.
