The British composer Sir Edward Elgar was a visionary, but as with many artists, he was unable to step back and foresee how his work could be exploited by politicians and businessmen. Everything he fought for passionately was twisted and turned into its opposite. In the end he was betrayed, disillusioned, and isolated. At just under an hour long, this early semi-documentary from Ken Russell is bursting with creativity and insight into Elgar's life. As always, Russell allows himself plenty of room for excess; this flick is punchy, witty, delirious, and sharp as a scalpel. Join us for a rare screening of Chapiteau-Show, a two part musical arthouse drama, and one of the most famous productions to utilize Crimea as a filming location prior to its annexation by Russia in 2014.
Chapiteau-Show depicts four overlapping stories centered around the same location: a mysterious circus tent on the coast of the Black Sea. The characters recur throughout the four short stories, taking turns on the main stage at exploring the themes of love, friendship, respect and cooperation. The absurd, playful and yet poignant approach to the subjects makes this composite tale a unique and fresh specimen of contemporary Russian cinema. Watch the trailer here.
