A Texas bar owner (Dan Hedaya) hires a sleazy private detective (M. Emmet Walsh) to spy on his cheating wife (Frances McDormand) and her lover (John Getz). But jealousy and greed soon lead to an intricate web of violence and betrayal.

Tom (Gabriel Byrne) is the eyes and ears for fearsome Irish mob boss Leo (Albert Finney). He's also secretly sleeping with Leo's brassy mistress Verna (Marcia Gay Harden). When a rival Italian gangster (Jon Polito) pressures Leo to kill Verna's corrupt brother Bernie (Jon Turturro), Tom finds his loyalties tested.

In Depression-era Mississippi, three convicts Ulysses (George Clooney), Pete (John Turturro) and Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) escape a chain gang, and set off in search of buried treasure. Along the way, they get mixed up with a bank robber, a one-eyed Bible salesman, and the KKK, among other historical and fictional figures.
