Mecha is an upper class woman who spends the summer with her large family in La Mandrágora, a decaying estate in Northwestern Argentina. Injured from a fall, she confines herself to her bedroom from where - scornful and tipsy - she resents her husband Gregorio, teenage son Josè and Mercedes , a woman from Buenos Aires with whom both men have had an unclear relationship.

Juan and Natalia take their two children to live in a remote Mexican community. Juan’s personal demon, however, follows him to the rural villa. Writer- director Carlos Reygadas paints Juan and Natalia’s descent into darkness with a sequence of surreal scenes that merge the characters’ lives with their lush surroundings and with situations that could be memories, fantasies or dreams
